Coachella Series 2016

Chic in the HEart of texas

Every Spring our social media feeds become filled with hundreds of thousands of boho chic [insert flower crowns, leather fringe, cut off shorts, heart glasses, flash tats etc..] festival theme posts. Everyone from celebrities, to online stores and bloggers feature trends and posts from the biggest musical festivals around the world. Well this year I, myself, will be taking a trip to a little music festival called COACHELLA and I could not be more excited!! In just 17 days my bestie and I will be heading to the desert for weekend 2, where we will be glamping it up at the on site, luxury Safari tents. These tents are not only gorgeous (hello, beds, wood floors, restrooms and a/c?!), but they also include full VIP access to the festival, concierge service, golf cart drivers to take us to and from the stages, breakfast and late night snacks, and access to the Artist Lounge.

Stylish Saturday Vol 4

image

Last Saturday at Mercury Project, Rejeana “Coco” Williams,  of Coco Productions, presented the 4th of her Stylish Saturday Series, an event which featured A. Leke, Amber Holmes, Daniel Hinojos, Diva J’s, Flawless Fashionista, Janay Towles, Kandi Factory, Meagan Cantu, Non Barbie Fashion, RoyalT Ink Kouture, Vida & Co and Yanna Mae. 12 local designers debuting their new collections in a back to back runway show. The Mercury Project, just blocks from Southtown, is an art gallery space, with a low key vibe. Cocktail hour took place outside before the show. Wine and finger foods were served among the lush patio, lined with palm trees and cacti (super instagramable).

Once the runway shows began I was completely blown away. Each collection was absolutely beautiful and so different from the one before it. Some collections featured gowns and flowy skirts, others were all about denim, fun prints and jumpsuits. There was even a men’s line in the mix. Seeing so much diversity from one collection to the next made for a very entertaining night, full of surprises. Coco put together such a phenomenal lineup of extremely talented designers and knowing that each designer was local (with the exception of one, who was from Austin), made it that much better.

Here are some of my favorite looks and highlights of the night.

Valentine’s Day

imageHappy Valentine’s Day y’all! I genuinely hope everyone out there had a great Valentine’s Day whether you were having a romantic date with your honey, girl squading it up, or treating yourself to a much needed Netflix binge sesh. It’s all about love! Love your partner, friends, family, pets, and above all don’t forget to love yourself!

This Valentine’s Day my honey and I decided to take a relaxing staycation. We checked into the romantic Hotel Valencia on Saturday and were welcomed with rose petals, champagne, and chocolate covered strawberries.

That night we had an amazing dinner at Luke. The the oysters were delish, the ‘Classy Lady’ chanpagne cocktail is now one of my faves, and the Duck Andoullie was one of the best dishes I’ve had in a while. There was also an accapella group going around and singing cute love songs at all the tables. It was adorable!!

After dinner, we ubered over to AMC Rivercenter to see Zoolander 2, which was hilarious! But even better was the theater! I had no idea that theater had huge leather seats that reclined!! Where have I been?! #newfavoritetheater

Today we went to the Farmers Market at the Pearl Brewery this morning for Local Coffee, Alchemy Kombucha, empanadas, and shopping. There were also tons of adorable Valentine’s Day baked goods as well. Like these cookies I just had to have from Ms.Chocolatier, that tasted just as good as they looked!

Who’s That Girl?

unspecified-6

Hello there and welcome to Chic in the Heart of Texas.

I’m Marisa and this is just a little peek into my life. Let me just start off by saying that I am not a model (lol, obviously). I am not hair stylist, makeup artist, fashion expert, personal trainer, professional chef, photographer, journalist, magazine editor, or even best friends with a reality star. So who am I? I’m a born and raised Texas girl. Beauty enthusiast, fashion obsessed, shopaholic, and lover of all things pretty and chic. I’ve always loved following fashion and lifestyle bloggers, (and before blogs/instagram, magazines, remember those?) lusting over their wardrobes and learning every new ‘effortless’ tip and trick in the book, picking up a few of my own along the way.

While I had always wanted to start a blog of my own I never thought I could actually swing it. Between going to school full time and working it was hard to find the time to do much of anything else. But over the past couple of years, along with keeping up with my busy school and work schedule, I also did the hardest thing I ever had to do, which was take care of my mom, who had been diagnosed with cancer in 2014. This was the most devastating thing to ever happen to my family. With my parents being divorced and my brother living out of town, I was the one who spent the most time caring for my mom. If anyone has ever had to care for a parent or family member, or has first hand seen someone go through cancer treatment, you know that it is extremely difficult to see someone you love go through that.

After several rounds of treatment, the doctors gave us the bad news that my mom was too weak to go through anymore and didn’t have much time left. My brother came into town and my whole family united to spend time with and care for my mom over the last several months of her life. During that time I had a lot of long talks with her. She told me how much she believed in me and that I had the ability to do anything because I had been through and was able to overcome so much in my life. After a long battle she passed away peacefully in August of 2015. This experience was, without a doubt, the most difficult thing I’ve ever had to go through. The adjustment hasn’t been easy but little by little I’m getting through it.

If I learned anything over the past couple of years, it’s that life is short and you have to make the most of it because time won’t stop for anyone. So over the past few months I began thinking about all the things that I wanted to do in my life and decided to just go for it. When the new year rolled around I made it my mission to work hard and bring this longtime dream of having my own blog to life.

So follow along as I begin my journey of bringing you your daily dose of all things pretty and chic from deep in the heart of Texas.
